HUCHUY
QOSQO |
3 days / 2 nights

Day 1: Cuzco
– Tambomachay – Pumamarca (L, D)
We start in Cusco
by car going to the ruins of Tambomachay (3700 meters).
From here we follow the main road, it curves sharply
up hill to reach a pass of near 4200 meters.
We follow it down
into a valley and through the small community at the
bottom. As we descend along the trail you will see a
beautifully green valley stretching away. The path we
see on its right slope leads to Pisaj. Passing through
the village and across a new bridge the trail takes
us up over the second pass at around 4300 meters into
high open country. On the route we will see Lake Qoricocha
(Golden Lake in Quechua) We continue along this clear
trail, arriving at the highest point of the trek, at
4350 meters. Finally, we descend towards the Pucamarca
community at 4010m/13153ft, where we arrive in the late
afternoon. Here we dine and camp through the night.
Day 2: Huchuy
Qosqo – Lamay – Cuzco (B, L)
Just below the village
the valley narrows to form a ravine where an Inca staircase
will lead us down to the magnificent citadel of Huchuy
Qosqo. Huchuy Qosqo is perched above the Urubamba Valley,
overlooking the little town of Lamay. It was an administrative
center such us Pisaj and has fine buildings made with
stone and there is one which is a unique example paved
with stones perfectly fitted. On the hillsides there
are granaries since it was also an important agricultural
center. Continuing along this magnificent path, with
Pitusiray looming aside us in the valley we will eventually
pass an Inca stone and adobe gateway. This was the entrance
to the ruins of Huchuy Qosqo for people who climbed
up from the Urubamba Valley. Lamay is a town dedicated
to agriculture and cattle rising. Later in the afternoon,
our private transport drives us back to Ollantaytambo
and we take the train to Aguas Calientes where
we will sleep in a hostal.
Day 3: Machu
Picchu – Cuzco (B)
We will have our
breakfast around 5:00 am and then we will go to the
Santuary Historic of Machupicchu and then we will make
the tour around 2:00 pm. At the appropriate time we
board the bus to Aguas Calientes and then the train
to Cusco.
