Arequipa

Arequipa, second biggest city in Peru and also known as the "White City" for its beautiful white walls of volcanic stone, lies at the feet of the mighty volcanoes of Mount Misti, Mount Chachani and Mount Pichu Pichu. The city is situated 2380 meters above sea level, and people who are arriving from the coast often need to take it easy for a couple of hours to get accustomed to the thin air.

The downtown of Arequipa is placed on the World Cultural Heritage list by UNSECO and features many baroque churches and mansions from the colonial period, as well as the great Monastery of Santa Catalina, a Spanish city in miniature with beautiful patios, stone streets and plazas. You also must visit “Juanita”, the best preserved mummy in the Americas, which was found in 1995 during an expedition high up in the mountains.

The Arequipa cuisine is a great addition to the beauty of the city, and often considered to be the best in Peru. In and around Arequipa you may also find many types of adventure sports such as trekking, white water rafting and mountain biking, etc. Arequipa has a good climate and you will often find the sun shining when you enjoy the cities beautiful architecture and “plazas” with palm trees, and also the breathtaking landscape that surrounds Arequipa.
